The Faculty of Health, Education, Life Sciences is pleased to host the inaugural lectures given by the faculty's newly appointed Professors. This professorial inaugural lecture will be given by Rishi Singhal, Professor of Bariatric Surgery.
Biography:
Professor Rishi Singhal is an internationally renowned bariatric and upper gastrointestinal surgeon with over two decades of expertise in minimally invasive and robotic surgery. His contributions to bariatric surgery, surgical innovation, and patient care have significantly shaped the field, particularly in the management of severe obesity and metabolic disorders.
Prof. Singhal completed his medical education in India before undergoing higher surgical training in the United Kingdom, where he was awarded Fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh. His proficiency in advanced laparoscopic and robotic techniques has cemented his reputation as a leading figure in bariatric and metabolic surgery.
With a career spanning over 4,000 bariatric procedures, Prof. Singhal is one of the most experienced surgeons in his field. His clinical expertise extends beyond primary bariatric surgery to complex revisional procedures, where he has performed the highest number of such surgeries in the UK—establishing a global benchmark in revisional bariatric surgery.
Beyond his surgical practice, Prof. Singhal is an active educator, researcher, and innovator. He has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals and co-authored several book chapters. His research interests include:
As the Medical Director of Healthier Weight, Prof. Singhal leads a dedicated multidisciplinary team specializing in gastric banding, gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and revisional bariatric surgery. He was instrumental in establishing a comprehensive weight-loss surgery program at Healthier Weight, ensuring the highest standards of safety, patient care, and long-term success.
Prof. Singhal’s expertise has been widely recognized in the media. He has been featured on BBC News and appeared in Channel 4’s documentary series, "Shut-ins: Britain's Fattest People," where he performed transformative bariatric procedures for patients suffering from extreme obesity.
In recognition of his contributions to bariatric surgery and surgical education, Prof. Singhal was honoured in 2022 with the title of Visiting Professor of Bariatric Surgery at Birmingham City University. His commitment to mentorship, research, and surgical excellence continues to shape the future of obesity treatment and metabolic surgery worldwide.
