Overview
Discover Scotland’s second-most-popular tourist attraction as you explore its bloody history, including the tales of kings and queens who once lived within these walls. Evidence shows a fort has stood here for nearly 3,000 years, and it became a royal castle during the reign of King David I in the 12th century. Scottish monarchs used the castle until 1633, and it was even the birthplace of King James VI. Your tour begins on the Royal Mile, leading you up to the castle, where your guide will share stories of its origins, historic sieges, and legendary moments. Once inside the castle grounds, you’ll visit various parts of the fortress and hear its rich, fascinating history. Within the complex, you’ll find three museums, two historic prisons, a canine cemetery, the Chapel of Saint Margaret, the National Monument to Scotland’s fallen, the Great Hall, and the Royal Palace. (Please note: the entire tour remains outdoors; interior buildings are not accessible during the tour.)
